Lagoon Marina,

La Ceiba, Honduras

Here we are...
6/1 We are at the beautiful Lagoon Marina in La Ceiba, Honduras.  We will probably be here or in the area during hurricane season this year.  It is an awesome place to enjoy the tranquility and well maintained grounds and facilities.
The entrance to the marina

And the driveway

And here we are

Upstairs, the open area at the apartments

The walkway to the apartments One of Sonny's favorite places A nice place to work on projects. We sew up here. I could live here.....
6/2 We are privileged to have access to a nice swimming pool, so we use it daily, at least once a day.
6/3 We swam today, again.  I know you are surprised....I also varnished the door to our new cabinet we had made in Cartagena (where we took out our 110 volt ice maker and now have shelves and storage.
Taped up and ready for varnish The finished product, with the mirror in the middle. We like. The finished product with the mirror on the door to our head. We like it too.

6/4 For some exercise, we walked today.   We started walking towards the city of  La Ceiba.   It was nice just to casually walk past markets, vegetable stands, and businesses.   We stopped in some and just walked past some.  We ended up at the Paiz grocery store.  It is supposed to be the Wal-Mart store of Central America.  We bought some fruits and vegetables, then took a taxi back to the marina with our goodies.

Sights in town.

Locals washing clothes and bathing in the local river in town. City electrical wiring....a nightmare It's a cattle drive. Need to pull over and wait. Here they come... And...there they go!
6/5 Since we are in a marina, we needed to put a zinc on our shaft to help with electrolosis.   The water in the lagoon is not clean, so early this morning, we motored out into the deep water, and Sonny jumped in the crystal clear, blue water and put the zinc on.  It took about an hour to get it in place and tight.
Sonny tried to put the zinc on in the lagoon, but the water was too dirty. So, we motored out to deep water where it is clear and beautiful. And, he jumped in, and was able to get our zinc on our shaft.

Then, we motored back into La Ceiba and back to the marina.

By now, it was after 8 a.m. and we were very hungry.   We still had some green bananas on board, so we prepared cayeye for breakfast.  It doesn't get any better than that.

After doing some boat chores, it was time for a swim....

6/6 It rained today....nice to wash off the boat and collect some fresh rain water in our water tanks.  But, we sure have enjoyed the luxury of having water from the dock.
6/7 Happy 36th Birthday
to our son, Taylor
We wish you a fun year ahead.
Taylor, Kodi, Riley, and Shea

6/8 Flowers around the marina
Wherever we are... we enjoyed the beautiful flowers..... and the bright colors... of God's creation..... We are blessed.
6/9 A baby hummingbird was hatched.
The empty parrot cage was the home for a baby hummingbird. The mother made a nest in the rope hanging down. And the baby hummingbird hatched. We watched him everyday as he grew and got stronger. Then, five days later, he flew away.
6/10 Some of the workers at the marina.

The trees near our spreaders needed trimming, so we got out our boson chair and Jose Louis went up to trim the branches, with his machete.

We are learning a lot about about recycling.....

Today, we took our sewing machine up to a nice area here at the marina and spread out a staysail that Damon and David on Bruadair gave us.  They were getting new sails, so we took their old one and are going to recycle it, into an awning on Valentina.

We used some of the same grommets in their sail and added some.  It will be a nice awning for us now.  The sail material will work nicely for an awning and shade.

Our new 'sail' awning. Sonny making some final adjustments on the lines.
6/12 Rain....rain....we are finally getting a rain shower this evening.  It is very nice, no wind, just a nice shower.
6/13 Today I re-stitched some of the seams in our mainsail cover up in the open area at the apartments.   We need to put some new fasteners on it now.
We enjoy watching for the two otters in the water. Sonny and Phil Washing off the deck From our point of view....

6/14 It's quadruple day on our telephone, so we made a special trip into the city to get phone cards.  It sure makes a difference.  And, an ice cream, of course.

A nice rain shower this evening.   I think the rainy season is near.

6/15 It's a red letter day for us.   Our first social security check was deposited into our account today.  So, I just need to keep Sonny breathing and we will make money each month.

It will be nice to have a little come in, rather than everything going out of our account.

6/16 I sewed a little today.   I am experimenting at making winch covers.  Finished one and it turned out good.   Need to make 3 more.
6/17

We went to town today to shop for vegetables and fresh fruit.  We absolutely love the produce in Central America.  We buy four large mangos for $1, pineapple for $1, papayas for $1.  You can imagine what we are eating these days.

A nice fresh fruit stand in town

A nice surprise.   Daryl Dollar and his son Donovan came to visit us today with their Honduran friend, Tita.  Daryl is the son of Kenneth and Leta Dollar, our close friends from Waxahachie, so it was so good to have Daryl and Donovan on Valentina.

Daryl and Donovan taking turns fishing Donovan caught several catfish Donovan at the helm of Valentina Sonny, Daryl, and Donovan in the pool

They were in Honduras on a mission trip, building a church about 2 hours away.  So, they came an spent the day and night with us before they went back to the States.  Donovan is such a fisherman!  And, he learned to snorkel, dive, and drive the dinghy.

6/19 We spent the morning swimming in the pool and the afternoon fishing on the dock.  Donovan caught some catfish, one very big one.
6/20 Our cruising friends for five years from Mario's Marina, Paul and Linda, of the S/V Miramar retired from sailing and bought a house near La Ceiba.  They invited us to their home and it was so nice.

They have created their small backyard into a garden of Eden, with a small pool, sitting area under a palapa, kitchen, and plants.

Paul and Sonny at the grill What a paradise of a backyard One of the six pools at their resort Sonny waking up in the hammock

Paul grilled some chicken, Linda prepared a nice salad, I brought pecan pie and Linda topped it with vanilla ice cream.  It just does not get any better than that.

6/21 We got on the computer, and our old faithful big Dell had a bad virus.  It would lock up and you could not do anything.   Paul took it to a guy in La Ceiba that works on computers and explained to him our problem.  When we picked it up, the bill was $100.  Sonny thought that was quite a lot of money for here to pay for the service.  But, it was 100 lps, which in US dollars is $5.00.   How happy we are!  And to have our computer back,  It is awesome.

How cool is this picture?

Paul and Linda loves to drive around, so they were showing us some of the countryside near La Ceiba and the pineapple fields for Dole (Standard Fruit).  It was the early evening, with a rain shower from the mountains and a rainbow right in front of us that went all the way to the ground.  "There" is our pot of gold we have been looking for.

6/22

What kind of tree is it?

Can you guess what kind of tree this is?

It was loaded......with.....

How many avocados can you count on this branch? They cost about fifty cents each in the stores.

Avocadoes

We went into town to a small alternator shop and in his backyard, were mango and avocado trees.  I could live there.   The avocado tree was packed as the limb above shows.

6/24

This morning Paul and Linda needed to go to town to run some errands, and asked if we wanted to go along....sure!  They are such great hosts and tour guides; it is helping us find our way around town.

A drive along the countryside

And, Paul loves to drive , so we drove out to the east of town today for a couple of hours to see the beautiful countryside and mountains.  The name of these mountains are, Numbre de Dios, Name of God.  How appropriate.

How pretty.

Along the countryside, were lots of orange trees.  We stopped along the road at a stand selling oranges.  The bag of 50 oranges cost 40 lps.

Green, juice oranges for sale Fifty oranges for two dollars

Or, $2 in US money.  They are oranges you squeeze for juice, green and delicious.

While we were driving around, they told of the story of the local man they call "Toothless Joe".  Everyone in Honduras works...at something.  Toothless Joe goes to different places in the area with a bucket and shovel and gets dirt along side the road and fills in pot holes.  As people drive by, they give him a donation.

We were probably 40 miles from town, and who do we see?   Toothless Joe, out in the middle of no where, filling potholes.

Toothless Joe... Doing his job.... And gladly accepting donations

Then, we went to their home for lunch and a restful afternoon of watching the hummingbirds....

A big green hummingbird Orchids Hibiscus...I can see why there are so many hummingbirds here A cinnamon hummingbird

and a dip in their pool...
Paul and Linda, great people Here we are....just chilling. Sonny under the waterfall

And relaxing, visiting with Paul

Young lady helping her family

Not all areas of Honduras are beautiful though, there are some very poor people, as in every country.  This young girl, probably 8 or 9 years old, is washing clothes with the wood piled up for their cooking.

6/26

After we arrived at the marina, we were asked to help out on the NW Caribbean Net, as this time of year, most of the cruisers head into the Rio Dulce and cannot communicate from there.  We said, "Sure".  We started Mondays and Thursdays on June 13th.  Then, by June 16th, there was no one doing the morning net at all.  So, Sonny and I have been net controllers everyday.   I gather the weather information for him and Sonny does the nets on the SSB radio every day.

But, now on Monday and Tuesdays, Gene and Molly on S/V Mariah are going to help out.  We are thankful, as we feel it is important to keep it going.  You never know who is listening.  Some only have receivers and need  weather or someone may need assistance or have an emergency.

Well, Sonny has been beating Greg and I at Baja Rummy the past two evenings.  It is our turn.  Or we will have to change to farkle soon!

The pool was nice today....refreshing.  We go in the late afternoon when the mosquitoes or no-see-ums come out for dinner.   If we stay under the water, they cannot bite us.

6/27
We have seen some of the most vivid rainbows here...

Sewing again....I am working on our enclosure in the cockpit.  With the rain just about every evening, it is so nice to be totally enclosed and dry in our cockpit.

6/28
The ice cream man in town After a trip into town this morning,

we just relaxed and swam today.

Young man with his two horses hauling supplies in town

I finally made some fresh watermelon drinks.  It is more than delicious.  I just put some watermelon, no seeds, in the blender with some ice, water,  and sweetener.  It is so refreshing.  This could be very habit forming in the heat of the day.

6/29

Project day on Valentina....We started early and emptied the quarter berth to check our batteries.  So, the boat is a disaster today.   Sonny also put in a switch for our regulator on our alternator.  Now we can turn it off, if needed while motoring, so it does not continually charge the batteries.  When completed and back in order, we celebrated with....cold watermelon juice.

A chart guiding you into the channel of La Ceiba

We equalized our batteries tonight while we are on shore power.

6/30 Sonny helped our friend, Phil, take his sailboat to the shipyard for a bottom job then we made a trip into town.  How spoiled you get, having stores and shopping to handy.  Fresh vegetables....fruit....and, ice cream.   It doesn't get any better than that.
